I follow the development of Frozen Depths since the first release. Now, after almost one year, Glowie has released a new version, 1.03, of the game. On the one hand, the release polishes many things, like balancing and interface. These changes make the game more enjoyable, and although I still die a lot, it feels not so randomly like in earlier releases (dying a lot in a roguelike is okay if the game produces the feeling that its the player's fault instead caused by the game's balancing).On the other hand, Frozen Depths 1.03 adds some new features, for example the so-called deep smith, a smith who repairs your weapon for a price you can decide by yourself. Depending on the price, his work will be more or less well done.
You now can also find material (like leather) and use that material to create new items (I must confess that this is a good idea; as you might know, my own roguelike, LambdaRogue, allows to disassemble items for getting resources, but until now, it only allows to sell these resources; using them to create new items might be a more useful way … )So, Frozen Depths is a great game and now better than ever, very easy to get into, and very fun. In short, one of my favourite roguelikes and one I play regularly (and these are not many; besides Frozen Depths only Moria and sometimes Angband).
