LambdaRogue .:. roguelike RPG

Something Different ...

Currently I'm a bit tired of LambdaRogue. Not because I think it's a bad game (I certainly don't, I love what I have done so far), but because it's the wrong medium for my current interests -- I want a game with a huge, but (in terms of places and map design) fixed world, a rich story told in lots of dialogues. These are things not really possible with roguelikes, as everything has to be random.

So what is the best medium for me?

mandatory randomness?

Um... do roguelikes HAVE TO be random? Look at ADoM: it was only randomish, since all that was random were most dungeons (certainly not all of them) and monster encounters. You will have to maintain a grade of randomness anyway, else any game you might try to write will eventually become predictable and boring. You want a fixed world? Cool, UR also started out with a fairly large fixed world. Fixed plot? Most games have this one. LR is not an exception. A rich story told in dialogues? It's a must in any self-respecting RPG, not just roguelikes.

While I respect your decisions and your feelings about LR, I strongly disagree with your arguments.

Not if it would be a classical adventure -- only to be played once, but if done right, this one play could be a nice experience. smile

Damn realeyes that REALLY looked like spam! Good thing that I'm gullible. :P

MD: It will be a shame to throw away LambdaRogue just for an overhead map; can't you make a branch of LR and experiment with a fixed overworld? Paint it as an image, or using ASCII-Paint or something (can't remember the exact name)? Then if you don't like it, stop working on that branch and do something else. (Either way LR is not screwed smile

I'll play echo chamber and say that a Roguelike of sorts would still work well for what you'd be in the mood for, just hewing closer to more stock RPG tropes.

You'd still have to reckon 2D versus 3D and what direction you'd come at the lot of it by...but still. A random world is really just a basic, entry level attribute of a Roguelike---there are other ways to approach the situation that can lead to a far more "robust" environ for a player to navigate. Some of my own secret game designs flow in a similar direction.

However it goes, you've likely got my support for another round of script revision and such English wise---other stuff too probably if I can manage to successfully rattle it out of my head as my work to broaden my skillbase is ongoing.
