By replacing the files bg-1024.png and bg-800.png it is possible to replace the default black background which is shown for unexplored areas. The result may look like on the screenshot below where I use a photo of Iceland as background.
While this particular example may not be convincing, it may be possible to find or create background images which really add to the atmosphere of the graphical mode of the game: A picture of a temple in the temple area, a volcanic landscape in the really deep levels, or a hills and forests landscape in the outskirts. I will think about this option -- unless you tell me it's totally nonsense (and please, if you think so, tell me!)
Anyway, here's the screenshot:

It's nonsense, but if you want to use backgrounds anyway then make them optional.

It could take some experimenting -- but I feel that if the image was watered down somewhat, darkened and using a limited palette of colors (ie, in red/yellow tones for a magma area; green for a forest, etc, and of course lots of black), it has the potential to look great ![]()
IMO the things that add more atmosphere are the most subtle ones, that don't distract you during normal play but are there nonetheless.

I think I will try to pick up your suggestions, Jotaf. If it seems to work out I'll post some screenshots and depending on the reactions I might include it. However, it will be always optional, as Krice suggested.
