What is the thing about stairs? Sometimes when I enter stairs they go in totally different place than where I was entering the stairs.

Two answers possible:

1. The second DLV (the catacombs) has two staircases up: one goes back to the temple, one (the brown colored) goes to the outskirts. Thus, the catacombs are some kind of passage to the outskirts.

2. DLVs are random-generated each time they are created (like in Angband), they do not stay the same over the game (as it would be in Nethack). So the positions of stairs change.

I went to outskirts from stairs up and was teleported in middle of nowhere. Then I found stairs and went down. Then I wanted to go back up, but ended up in sewers of some kind. That was surprising, because I wanted to go back to outskirts. I'm already confused where I am, but that doesn't matter. It's a nice game and getting better (except for stairs that confuse mesmile

Have you read the text which appears when you first enter the outskirts? The text tells you that, when you continue to control your character, you already wandered through the landscape for a while. That's why you are away from the stairs.

Just remember: The brown staircases lead from catacombs to outskirts and back. Gray staircases (resp. blue, if you play the ASCII mode) always lead to dungeons bzw. deeper/higher DLVs. So you probably entered the Forgotten Realm.

Thank you for the kind words. smile

Correction

I re-read your comment. Now I would say you perhaps mixed up the stairs -- entered a staircase down although you thought to enter a staircase up.

I visited Forgotten Realm, too. But I left it because a ghost was about to kill me. Then I entered that another place and tried to go up (I guess), but then I was in sewers.. Maybe it's confusing because there is one command for entering stairs. It's actually interesting thing, because many developers have guessed that saving one keypress and using one Enter key is better. But I don't know! There is certain clarity in using down and up keys for entering stairs, because you instantly know which direction you are going.

I agree, there might be more clarity. I thought about this after your initial comment, too. However, I'm a player who always reads the text messages more than viewing the dungeon map, thus it is clear then. And the SDL mode always shows up and down arrows next to the stairs.
